From CityU’s Alumni Director
Let’s face it. You need social and professional networking to grow in your career or business—no matter your industry or chosen field.
A disconcerting trend I’ve noticed is the belief that one merely needs to connect electronically in order to benefit. That couldn’t be more incorrect.
Building the relationship is what’s important. I’m a huge proponent of online networks, including our own City University of Seattle alumni online community. Still, virtual networking does not ensure a real connection or honest referral.
You also can build strong relationships in person. Don’t pass up the face-to-face networking opportunities available through your professional organizations and your alumni office.
Try to be picky about the online networks you choose to join as there are so many. I have been invited to at least ten different ones in the last month alone. I look for social networks with a respectable reputation and a large membership base to ensure I’ll find some good connections. I also want my profile information protected from spammers and hackers, of course.

All the best,
