June 2009: Updates

Thomas A. Furniss, Class of 1977 & 1979, plans to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife Diane this summer. The couple met in Tacoma and married on Aug. 3, 1959 along Spanaway Lake in Parkland, Wash. Thomas, who is retired from the Navy, Air Force and Department of Energy, worked as a student faculty representative while studying at CityU’s Bremerton facility. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree and later a Master of Business Administration from CityU. The couple has three children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Christine Katayama, CityU of Seattle Diversity Committee Chair & Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction Faculty/Program Coordinator, received an appointment to serve on the Bias and Sensitivity Review Panel for the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Katayama plans to participate in a formal evaluation of the Washington Comprehensive Assessment Program - Measurements of Student Progress. Katayama and her fellow committee members are expected to revise items for cultural bias and security. Findings will be used to develop questions for the WCAP K-12 reading assessments.

Ed Serra, Jean Geer and Daron Wilson, CityU of Seattle Faculty Members, all earned the 2009 President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. They received their awards during a special Faculty Recognition Brunch at the Key Arena before commencement. Serra belongs to the Educational Leadership Program, Wilson teaches College Algebra in the Division of Arts of Sciences and Geer serves as an online instructor for the Essentials of Business Management class.
