Debbie George

Debbie George, Class of 1986, accepted the newly created position of Global Brand Marketing Leader for Aerial Work Platforms, a business segment of the Terex Corporation based in Redmond, Wash. She will oversee creative aspects of the Genie and Terex AWP brands. George graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Management.

Kathryn Boudreau-Stroud, Class of 1993, received the 2007 Golden Apple Award from KCTS9 public television for making a positive difference in the classroom. Boudreau-Stroud teaches science at Beaver Lake Middle School in the Issaquah School District. She earned her Master of Education Curriculum and Instruction degree. 

David Anderson, Class of 1998, also received the 2008 Golden Apple Award from the KCTS9 public television. The Mount Vernon High School principal and seven other faculty members from various Washington state schools were recognized for making a positive difference. Under Anderson’s leadership, the school’s Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) scores improved dramatically and additional AP courses were added in several subjects. Anderson earned his Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership and Principal Certification.

Eric Grulke, Class of 2001 and 2006, recently completed his Doctorate in Political Science at Washington State University. His dissertation is entitled Digital Government, Trust and Cynicism: An Empirical Analysis of Social Capital and the Use of Technology by Governmental Institutions. Grulke earned his CityU Bachelor degree in Political Science in 2001 and his CityU Master degree in Computer Systems in 2006.

Peter Chan, Class of 2006, was featured in a story on male teachers in the Columbian newspaper. Chan teaches at Clark County’s Harney Elementary School in Vancouver and graduated from the Master in Teaching Teacher Certification program. Read the story here.

Tom Baker, Class of 2008, accepted the position of School Director at the Oslo International School in Oslo, Norway. He previously worked as Deputy Head of School for Learning at International School Bangkok in Thailand. Baker graduated from the Albright School of Education’s Executive Leadership & Superintendent Certification Program.

Nov. 7, 2008: UPDATES

David Bianchini, Class of 1995, received the 2008 Washington State Assistant Principal of the Year award in February. He works at Granite Falls Middle School and helped create a slogan that reflects the school’s five core values in the community. GFMS R.O.C.K.S stands for Granite Falls Middle School Respect, Opportunity, Community, Knowledge and Service. Bianchini earned his Master of Education degree in Guidance and Counseling from the Albright School of Education.

Francisco Vega, Class of 2008, accepted a position as a banquet sales manager with Barbara Worth Golf Resort in Holtville, Calif. Vega graduated from CityU’s partner university CETYS Universidad in Mexico where he earned his undergraduate degree in Marketing Management. He also earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree with an emphasis in General Management from CityU.

Roger Chikamura, Class of 2008, was recently named the chief engineer for the Boeing Seattle Bombers and Weapons program. He will provide management oversight and leadership for several managers in engineering development, design and support. Chikamura graduated from the School of Management with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in General Management.

Anita Roth, Class of 2008, accepted Tacoma’s McKinley Elementary principal position for the 2008-2009 school year. Roth previously served as the elementary literacy facilitator for curriculum and instruction in the Tacoma Public School District. Roth graduated with her Master of Education degree and Principal Certification from the Educational Leadership program.

October 17, 2008: UPDATES

Tracy Krause, Class of 1995, won the 2008 National High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year award from the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance. He works as a health and fitness instructor at Tahoma Senior High School in Maple Valley, Wash. Krause earned his Master in Teaching with a Teacher Certification in Special Education from CityU. 

June Wong, Class of 2007, and Shelly Bonnah, Class of 2008, had theses published by VDM Verlag - a Web-based service that publishes worldwide academic research for free. Wong wrote The Relationship Between Chinese Mothers-In-Law and Daughters-In-Law and Bonnah completed Profiles of Resistance. Both graduated with their Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology degrees from CityU’s Vancouver, BC campus. Theses from Wong and Bonnah can be purchased on Amazon.com.

Randy Aliment, CityU of Seattle Board of Governors Chair and Senior Partner with Williams Kastner, PLLC, recently was appointed an American Bar Association (ABA) delegate to the Council of the UIA International Association of Lawyers in Paris, France. The ABA chose Aliment because he demonstrates international experience to guide UIA policy consistent with international law policy of the ABA. He was one of four delegates selected for the honor. Aliment, who will begin his new role in November, served as CityU’s legal counsel from 2000 to 2006 and later joined the Board.

Wanda Brown, Class of 2008, joined the Seattle School District as the Director of Support, Prevention and Intervention. She will provide leadership for several managers in student support/learning and teaching services. Brown graduated from the Executive Leadership Program with a superintendent certification.

Avraham Cohen, CityU Vancouver senior faculty member, co-wrote a journal article in Radical Pedagogy’s June Issue. The publication is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal devoted to the analysis of teaching and learning. Cohen’s piece was entitled An Experiment in Radical Pedagogy: Enactment of Deep Democracy Practices in a Philosopher’s Café.

Jodi Bongard, Class of 1995 and 2000, recently became the Executive Director of Elementary Education for the Issaquah School District. Prior to this, Bongard served as the former principal of Endeavour and Briarwood elementary schools in Washington state. She also worked as an elementary school teacher for 17 years. Bongard earned her Master of Education Curriculum and Instruction degree and her administrative credential from CityU.

Susan Hanson, Class of 1998, helped lead her Vashon Island High School to be recognized as a 2008 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School. Hanson, principal of the Washington state high school since 1998, was among three other local administrators who represent schools that were nominated by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson. Hanson graduated with her Masters of Education Administration degree and administrative credential.

Heather Fowler, Class of 2003, and her former Shahala Middle School class showcased a class project on changes to school vending machines on the Washington State Public Affairs TV Network. The Vancouver, Wash. teacher participated in the program last year as a part of Project Citizen, a national civics education program. Click here to watch the recently released online video. Fowler now works at Union High School for the Vancouver School District. She graduated from the Albright School of Education with her Master’s in Teaching Degree and is certified national board teacher in young adult English and Language Arts.

Patrik Choleva, Class of 2004, joined the Skanska global construction company as its financial director and executive board member, according to the Prague Post. Choleva continues to study business law in the Czech Republic. He graduated with his Master’s in Business Administration.

Kathy Connally, Class of 2006, accepted the role of interim principal for Endeavour Elementary School. She succeeds fellow Education Leadership program alumna Jodi Bongard. Connally served as an elementary teacher for 20 years in New Hampshire, New York and Michigan before joining the Issaquah School District in 1994 as a teacher. Prior to becoming principal, she held the position of both Program Assistant and Assistant Prinicipal at Endeavour Elementary. She became one of the district’s first instructors to earn her National Board Certification.

September 19, 2008: UPDATES

Mary Glodowski, Class of 2006, won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching from the National Science Foundation. She was one of two Washington State teachers to receive the award. The Juanita High School teacher graduated with a M.Ed. in Technology from City University of Seattle.

Rebecca Johnson, Class of 2008, accepted an assistant principal position at Squalicum High School in the Bellingham School District. Johnson graduated from the Albright School of Education with her principal’s certificate. “I’m so thrilled about the job!” she says.

Paul Douglas, Class of 1999, became principal of Carter Lake Elementary School. The Albright School of Education graduate previously worked as principal at Auburn School District’s Olympic Middle School. Douglas’s new role was previously held by Charlotte Clouse, Class of 1996, who will become principal of Southgate Elementary School. Clouse graduated from the Albright School of Education and leaves the Clover Park district after more than 10 years of service.

Ted Havens, Class of 2000, began his third year as principal of Visitation Catholic School in Forest Grove, Ore. The school, which is a part of the Archdiocese of Portland, broke a record for student enrollment this year with 140 students, preschool through eighth grade. Havens graduated from the Albright School of Education with his master’s degree in teaching.

September 3, 2008: Updates

Newsweek magazine featured two Pierce County high schools on its 2008 nation’s top high schools list led by Albright School of Education graduates. They are principals Tim Winter of Pennisula High School and Jennifer Bethman of Graham-Kapowsin High School. Winter graduated in 1995 and Bethman in 2000 from the Educational Leadership program. 

Tracey Larsen (Rollins), Class of 1997, accepted a social worker job at the Washington State Children’s Administration. The MACP program (cohort 17) graduate also was married last February.

Craig S. Timmons, Class of 1998, received the Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in May. The Richland, Wash. resident joined 218 others who earned their three-year graduate degree or professional degree for ministry. Timmons graduated with his M.Ed. degree from CityU of Seattle.

Kathy Johanson, Class of 2002, and business partner Stacy Lill recently awarded their first college scholarship through a donation program funded by their business O Wines. The Woodinville winery entrepreneurs donate a portion of all proceeds to establish scholarship funds for Washington state low income, high potential girls. Johanson, who graduated with her Master of Science in Project Management degree, also works for Boeing as a Core Program, Planning and Control Manager.

Byron Gerard, Class of 2003, accepted an assistant principal position at Mt. Baker High School. The Albright School of Education graduate previously worked as an assistant principal at Kulshan Middle School in the Bellingham School District. “I am excited to return to the high school arena and the professional development that it will provide me on my journey to being a building principal some day,” Gerard says.

Michael Galvin, Class of 2007, recently was hired for an IT position focusing on systems and change management. Says Galvin, “This is going to be one beautiful career!”
